It's like landing in Monaco. The huge wooden doors make you feel tiny when you arrive at the Monte Carlo Beach Club. Friendly staff welcome you all the way to the infinity pool that blends in with the beach and aquamarine water backdrop. It's really spectacular. Treat yourself to a drink at the bar on the right and watch the Arabian sunset at its best. If you're lucky, you might even see the turtles nesting a stone throw away. Abu Dhabi has set the bar quite high and we're not impressed too quickly. Monte Carlo does exactly that. It takes your breath away. Treat yourself!

One of the best places to ever buy ice cream in the UAE. And for someone who is lactose intolerant, I can actually eat the stuff. Don't understand why, but I love that I can.
Their cheese cake mixer with berries and crunch is the best.

I did not grow up in a Jazz culture and therefore never got into the music that much. The Jazz Bar Abu Dhabi converted me. The vibe in here is surreal and you're guaranteed a good time.
Most of the members are usually from South Africa and rocks it like only Cape Town can. For those home sick Saffas, this is the place to go. Remember the dress code. No T-shirts and flip flops allowed. I've learned the hard way. ;)

The manager will probably shoot me if I say why I love Splash, but hear me out. If you love theme parties and just going way out, Splash is the place to visit baby.
Chains, bling-bling, check, glitter and everything that would hurt the eyes. It's scary when you walk in the shop to realize that people wear this as 'regular' attire, but I get it. It's funky and you'll get attention for sure. It's cheap and fun and a must visit to anybody who doesn't like to fade in with the furniture at parties.

Although, nobody's perfect, I have to give UAE Exchange five stars only because I've had pulling hair from your head experiences in so many countries with so many places.
What makes it great is that you can send money home in your own currency and you save money this way too. The money is always there in time and the service is fast and thorough.

Just before the financial crisis in 2009 I wanted to buy a Pajero. Walked into the showroom and wasn't even greeted. Guys are sitting behind their desks, waiting for you to approach them. They didn't have any in stock and asked me to phone in a month. After 3 calls in the month after that, the guy said: "Stop calling us. We'll call you." Love the car, love the brand, but will never support Abu Dhabi's Al Habtoor as it's the worst service I've ever had here.

This was one of my favourite places in Abu Dhabi. The setting is great, the food is good, but since they've lost their liquor license it's been spiraling downwards faster than Linsay Lohan.
As soon as this topic is mentioned to any waiter, they duck and dive it like a good dodgeball match and this is just a sign that there's no end in sight for the dry season just yet.

Woolies in South Africa is the place to go for clothes, but I find that the clothes here are really expensive compared to South African prices and the stock is not as varied. Therefore I tend to avoid shopping here.

Okay, I'm not getting engaged in this restaurant as it's maybe just not the right setting, but you've got to give Ibrahimi one big thumbs up when it comes to lamb chops. By far the best tasting lamb chops I've found in the city in 3 years.
If ambience and five star service isn't everything to you, you will enjoy the dining experience.

I adore Korean food and if it's kimchi you want, then this is the place to get it. Traditional booths where you take off your shoes and sit on the wooden floor, makes the experience just so much more authentic.
There are plenty of options to choose from and the barbequed meat is great. It's also not a place that you'd probably go home hungry afterwards. The service is just mediocre and nobody falls over their feet to serve you here. Maybe I'm just used to the service in other places and I'm used to an Abu Dhabi standard. It could get a little pricey too for Asian cuisine, so don't be frightened when a bill of 250Dhs lands between two people. All in all, it's not a bad place. And it's the closest thing to real Korean you get in the city.

Abu Dhabi has more than enough fancy bars and restaurants to show off with, but few actually remember that they're working with real humans and the 'bling bling' overshadows the heart. I've never here (or any other place in the world) felt more special than the way 31st Bar made me feel last week. Not only were they friendly and kind, but also extremely professional. Even my friends asked me if I had invested in the Holiday Inn, because they've never been treated in such a VIP manner ever.
The drinks are similar prices to most bars in Abu Dhabi and the view from the top is just grand. You can really see a good angle of the Capital Gate building (aka leaning tower of Abu Dhabi)

I've only experienced take aways here and after dialing 02 445 8686, you can be sure that superb food is on its way. It's not only affordable, but stands out above the rest for that price range. Most dishes are around (20 - 30) Dhs and the briyani is to die for, as well as the Vegetable Jhalfrezi.
The service is quick and the food is out of this world. I've looked for better Butter Chicken in expensive Indian restaurants, but couldn't find any.

The view from the top is gorgeous and you can see a lot of Abu Dhabi from there. Of course it's better when it's not too hot outside, but because of it's remote location, you don't feel the Hamdan Street claustrophobia.

By far the best Murgh Makhani (Butter Chicken) in Abu Dhabi. Finger licking good.

What sets Al Reyami Travels apart from the rest is their friendliness and willingness to help. You're immediately treated as an individual and they'll even remember your name by your 2nd visit.
I've always wanted to travel to South America and had to visit Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Peru. The flight would have been so expensive, but due to their tailoring skills and professional advice, I saved almost 9,000 Dirhams in the end. Al Reyami travels is behind the EMAX building on Hamdan street near the Hamdan/Al Najda streets. Parking used to be a nightmare, but the Mawaqif system fixed all that. By far my favourite place to shop in Abu Dhabi. I'm a tall guy (1,90m) and getting clothes that fit is a problem sometimes. Zara delivers.
The clothes are not cheap, but their quality is great. There are a lot of items to choose from and they cater for smart, casual and everything inbetween.

Now this is like a little piece of heaven that dropped down in Abu Dhabi. Far above the average bakery or coffee shop.
One gets the feeling that your meal was prepared especially for you and not just a cook who plopped down a piece of patty on a burger. The various tastes I've experienced here, redefined my vocabulary of words like 'succulant' and 'scrumptious'. If you want quality, you'll have to pay for it and therefore Jones is not one of the cheapest out there, but at least you get what you pay for and more. The crowd here is also very nice. My kind of people. You won't find crazy children running around banging each other with trays and menus like in many of the other places.

This is the place to be when we're not scorching in the heat outside. Although the decor is superb inside, it's the relaxing atmosphere outside that really draws attention.
The sunset near the Capital Gate building is one of my favourite spots to sit and indulge everything around you. The perfect place to chill out after a long day. It can get quite busy over the weekends and later at night, so make sure you get there early, even if it's just to watch the sunset. The service is good and drinks are standard price.

Although the name is a little strange, don't let that put you off. Automatic is up there with some of the best Lebanese restaurants in Abu Dhabi. The food is always fresh and you can't go home hungry. It's almost impossible.
It's located in the Al Mariah Mall and a great place to visit before going for a movie of doing the rest of your shopping. Try the Avocado shake here too, and the mixed grill is a must. So is the Hummous and meat. Each time I get visitors from other countries, Automatic is one of my first stops to help introduce them to Middle Eastern cuisine.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the movies, the quality of the sound, or the seating. Vox Cinemas are really listening to their customers and improving the overall movie experience.
My issue with this cinema is that it's the one place in Abu Dhabi that you seldom enjoy the movie experience (which is expensive compared to other countries) People take out their bright phones all the time, make calls, answer calls, BBM and everything you can possibly do on a phone. Other than that, they make loud comments and are rude to anyone who asks them to keep quiet. I wish I could take all of them to Dubai to show them proper manners. I'd rather drive there to ever waste my money at this cinema. Parents with 5 year olds are also allowed to enter adult rated movies of 18 and up and nobody does something about this. Truly unacceptable.

This bakery is often overshadowed by it's big brother next door, 'Lebanese Flower'. Don't confuse the two. The bakery is especially famous for it's pastries. Meat and chees, Labneh and Zatar, everything that every pastry lover enjoys. They're also dirt cheap as you'll pay between 6 to 8 Dirham for most.
It's a quick meal and affordable. If it's not scorching ourside, they have shisha too for the fans of the pipe. All in all great food. The service isn't as great as you get in other places, but you forget to complain after a good meal.

The Meat Co needs no introduction to meet lovers in Abu Dhabi. Except for Chamas, this other brother can stand proud as one of the best meat eating experiences in Abu Dhabi.
Nestled cosily on the mainland and part of the Souk At Qaryat Al Beri, the location is just perfect. Especially at night when you have a good view of the Sheikh Zayed Mosque across the water. The South African hospitality is evident and the waiters go out of their way to be humorous, make suggestions and their knowledge of the menu and wine is impressive. The dinner might cost you an arm and a leg, especially if you have a glass or two of wine also, and therefore it's recommended as a special dining experience for meat lovers only. Vegetarians will not feel too welcome amoungst the carnivores.

This is a relatively new restaurant in the Al Nayan area and it's part of a hotel, but it's not hard to find.
As soon as you walk into the doors, you get the idea that it will burn a hole in your wallet, but when you reveive the gorgeous menu, you'll be surprised at how affordable the food actually is. The guys who run this restaurant, are excellent. The staff are going out of their way to treat you like royalty and they'll even dish your food for you. Indian favourites like the Chicken Tikka (30Dhs) and Butter Chicken (30Dhs) are available as well as many others. Don't miss the Mint Cooler. A great area, parking available, good service and all in all great dining. Make sure you book a family cabin for a more personal experience. Their website: http://www.themaharajapalace.com/
