  • Review by Yumna of Dome Cafe Al Wahdah

This cafe is good for a quick bite (the food is excellent!), but not for a leisurely coffee outing; there are too many passersby looking in and the chairs are a little stiff, unless you're lucky enough to get the only couch.
I had the bruschetta (good, but too much garlic), the breaded chicken escalope (pretty standard, but came with surprisingly great potato wedges), and a blueberry yogurt drink which was absolutely fantastic and doubled as dessert. Very flavorful food, friendly service. I've passed by many times and only expected a cafe with salads and drinks, but it exceeded my expectations. Reasonable prices.
  • Review by Yumna of Cho Gao
I tried Cho Gao for the first time recently, and I'll definitely be going back. The restaurant is quite welcoming, appropriate for small or large groups. The servers are very, very friendly, but my group did run into a few hiccups: a drink arrived that nobody had ordered and they ended up splitting the bill in two for each table, even though the groups sitting at both tables were part of the same party. Forgivable considering the large number of diners, though.
I tried the steamed seafood dumplings (Dhs 35 for six pieces) which were quite good and the Nasi Gurang (Dhs 65) which doesn't look like you'd expect but which I enjoyed very much. The curries also look very appetizing. Non-smoking atmosphere, and a pretty wide range of alcoholic drinks available as well. Parking can be a little difficult on that side of the city, so factor in parking time.
  • Review by Yumna of Posters
Posters is great for original gift ideas and hours of entertainment. I can hardly resist sparing a few minutes to walk in and check it out whenever I'm close by, even if I know I might spend some cash on things I don't really need.
The store sells toys, costumes, frames, gifts and novelty items. I'm a total sucker for the music posters, coasters, stickers and pins, and the very original gift cards. I recently went shopping there for a friend's bachelorette party and found some good items. And with Halloween coming up, I say check it out for fun costumers and props. Most items are quite pricey though, probably because they are only sold there, and because Posters has a very dedicated fan base. I myself have been a customer since I was a child! Speaking of which, approach the store with a child at your own risk; they will not want to leave.
  • Review by Yumna of Mondo Moderno
Unlike the other malls in the city, Khalidia mall definitely has a lack of good cafes. Mondo is one of the few places I enjoy there, however. The seating area is a little awkward, and it seems to be where a lot of guys were wasting time waiting for their wives/girlfriends to finish shopping. No families, as far as I could tell.
My friend and I both had orange juice, which was fresh and pulpy, just the way I like it, but despite asking for ice in one of the juices explicitly, they were both served ice-less. We shared an order of mini-burgers (three burgers - easily a single serving, but with a side it was good for us both) and a side of potato wedges, with came with cheese and green peppers and was delicious. We did want to try the sweet crepes, which sound great, but were too full. Price range about 45 dhs per person. Good for a quick bite while you're between stores; not my first choice for a hangout spot.
  • Review by Yumna of Downtown
Downtown seems ideal for quick business meetings as this is their main clientele as far as I can tell, but for me it's just a great place to unwind after a long day, whether with a cup of tea or a meal. The menu is exhaustive, and includes everything from sandwiches and Asian food to pizza to great looking desserts.
Prices are a little on the high side generally compared to similar cafe/restaurants, but average compared to hotel restaurants; most main courses are about 80 dhs. I ordered a minestrone soup (excellent), club sandwich (standard, good, filling serving), a scoop of vanilla ice cream (although the dessert display did look good) and a cup of tea. Total was around 150 dhs with tip. Service is very efficient. Smoking allowed; alcohol served. The Sheraton has some parking next to the hotel, more behind it.
  • Review by Yumna of P.J. O'REILLY'S
The Royal Meridien is not my first choice of hotel in the city, but I like the location and amenities (like the hairdresser, honestly). PJ's is great for after work drinks and whenever you're in the area and looking for somewhere to unwind. The drink prices are pretty fair, and the food is good! There's a quiet poolside outdoor area for when the weather is nice, and the upstairs area is good if you need a break from the loud downstairs and would prefer a conversation to mingling. They also have karaoke nights which look like buckets of fun!!
  • Review by Yumna of Cafe De La Paix
Despite its location in a mall, and right next to a noisy ice rink no less, this place is quite nice. The food is pretty fantastic - I recommend the onion soup, lasagna, sandwiches and calamari. The savory crepes are a bit too rich for my taste, but the sweet ones are great; the jam crepe is perfect for a snack if you can't decide whether you're hungry. The service standards seem to depend on the time of day; sometimes there are too many waiters walking around and sometimes you can't find any. And their drinks could use some help; sodas always seem to come at the wrong time (like as soon as I start drinking my soup) and their iced tea is pretty mediocre.
  • Review by Yumna of Camelia Flowers
Camelia Flowers is based behind Grand Stores in Khalidia, in a cute standalone building with an adjoining Starbucks, so that alone is a reason to visit. They sell all kinds of flowers and plants, both indoor and outdoor. They even have a weekly flower bouquet service (usually used in offices) and upkeep services where plant care professionals visit regularly to water and generally take care of your plants for you. The downside to this fantastic place is its prices, of course. The plants are quite expensive (although they are of very good quality and tend to live for a very long time).

This place looks great from the outside - wood, homey, and totally unlike the rest of the Intercontinental hotel.
On the inside, it's just that, but it can get a little claustrophobic when it's crowded - too many corners, tight seats and it can get very loud. Several acquaintances have recommended the food, and it does look very flavorful and hearty. The selection of drinks is large and their prices are pretty standard. It's a great place for a quick after-work drink and meetup with friends.

Although there is a huge range of cafes in Marina Mall, somehow I still end up going to this one a lot.
The location is a little strange - it's kind of hidden and too visible at the same time - but the seating is comfortable. Their food is freshly prepared and very tasty, and their menu keeps changing (expanding mostly). The portions are quite large and filling. I've tried out several salads and sandwiches and they have all been very satisfying. The staff is very friendly, but it can be a little difficult to get their attention. However, it's still a nice place to stop for a cup of tea or some dessert to take a break from your shopping trip.
  • Review by Yumna of The Face Shop
It seems like this place sprouted all over Abu Dhabi while I wasn't looking. I've seen it in Marina Mall and Khalidia Mall and I think there will be more soon.
The Face Shop sells all sorts of bodycare products and makeup. I'd recommend their yummy-smelling body lotions, nail polishes and makeup brushes. They also have a great collection of lip colors and glosses, including a honey lip balm (which I haven't been able to find in other places for some time). Their collection of face masks is also large and varied, for those who are interested. The sales assistants were very friendly and quick to point out their favorite products, which is always helpful. All in all, my first visit was a successful one. Watch out for unplanned purchases though - you're bound to make one!
  • Review by Yumna of Frankie s Italian Restaurant and Bar
    9 years ago
I'm not a huge fan of Italian food - it used to be my favorite but too much of a good thing really does turn you against it. But Frankie's is not your typical Italian restaurant, and anyway, I'd take any excuse to visit the Fairmont hotel.
This place is best for a low-key celebration or an intimate dinner; it's pretty, posh and dimly-lit. The menu is... unorthodox. You'll want to go through it a couple of times before making a choice. I don't recommend the gnocchi (much too heavy), but the lasagna is good. The food is slightly too rich and the portions are a bit small, but the dessert is heavenly. I would steer clear of the typical pastas and go for something you've never tried before. I also recommend you enjoy dinner indoors then take your dessert or after dinner drinks out to the outdoor area. The ambiance is quite charming.

Yes! That french toast! It's marvelous.
I think the key is to find out when this place is empty and head there. I really don't enjoy that most of the time the people at the next table can hear my entire conversation. Do they have outdoor seating? I hadn't noticed. That would be great, I think.
  • Review by Yumna of Miss J Cafe

I've never visited Miss J Cafe for a sit-down, but I've had dessert from there. Their chocolate cake is amazing! It's a favorite for birthdays and other events. Highly recommended.
  • Review by Yumna of Teatro
Although this restaurant is a little difficult to find, it is worth getting a little lost on the way.
I'm not usually a fan of eclectic menus - and Teatro's is just that, including Chinese, Japanese, Indian and Italian - but I have to agree this menu does include something for every taste. Among my recommendations are the Indian butter chicken (which I enjoyed more than most butter chicken courses I've had at specialized Indian restaurants), the Chinese noodles and the amazing chocolate fondant.

Sho Cho was my introduction to sushi and I've never looked back.
Great view, great food, great service; this place is just one of the best Japanese food restaurants in Abu Dhabi. Try their calamari salad (very basic dish, fantastic dressing) and of course any and all sushi rolls. Do call ahead because they close between lunch and dinner.
